"This research has provided greater understanding in the court systems nationwide as to the nature of drug usage, abuse, and overdose cases in which electronic cigarettes were used to deliver an illicit drug," the researchers concluded. THC, synthetic cannabinoids, and dextromethorphan, a drug found in some cough medicines, "were identified in e-liquids purportedly containing only CBD to be consumed for ‘health benefits,’" the researchers said. Results from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey do not provide evidence for or against the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, or as a gateway to tobacco smoking. The age groups most likely to smoke tobacco in 2019 and 2022–2023 were the least likely to use e-cigarettes, and the age groups most likely to use e-cigarettes had low tobacco smoking rates in 2019 and 2022–2023. In 2022–2023, 1 in 5 (19.8%) people aged 14 and over in Australia reported having used e‑cigarettes at least once in their lifetime, with 7% currently using e‑cigarettes at least daily, weekly, monthly, or less often than monthly.

Nicotine-free e-juice contains a number of potentially toxic chemicals, such as base liquids and flavoring agents. However, based on the experience with cigarettes, similar adverse health effects, including COPD, heart disease, and cancer, can be expected. Finally, a 2017 review of the cardiovascular effects of vaping indicates that e-cigarettes may pose certain risks to the heart and circulatory system, notably for people who already have some form of heart disease.
The program offers specially-trained coaches, real-time text or chat support, easy enrollment and youth-focused promotional and educational materials. The majority of cases reported to poison centers are due to accidental exposures in children less than 6 years old. This reflects the increasing availability of these products in the home due to use by guardians or older siblings. Additionally, in the last 5 years, the FDA has warned companies selling e-cigarette devices made in the shape of toys, foods or cartoons that specifically appeal to use by young people. Of this sample, 3,242 participants developed heart failure within a median follow-up time of 45 months. As e-cigarettes deliver flavorings, additives, and, typically, nicotine through an inhaled aerosol, they are harmful to both the user and those who are exposed secondhand.
The device heats a liquid into an aerosol (sometimes known as "vapour" and mistakenly called "water vapour"). Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, and pouches. Over 50% of middle school and high school students reported seeing e-cigarette advertising. Only 28% of young people in the U.S. believe e-cigarettes have the potential to cause a lot of harm. Friday’s action is part of a sweeping FDA review intended to bring scientific scrutiny to the multibillion-dollar vaping market after years of regulatory delays. Currently the U.S. market includes thousands of fruit- and candy-flavored vapes that are technically illegal but are widely available in convenience stores, gas stations and vape shops. Most teens who vape use disposable e-cigarettes, including brands like Elf Bar, which come in flavors such as watermelon and blueberry ice.
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
Electronic cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. Richmond-based Altria previously took a $13 billion stake in Juul in 2018, when the brand controlled most of the U.S. vaping market. But Juul’s value plummeted after it was hit with lawsuits and investigations over its role in sparking a national spike in underage vaping.
The Lung Association remains extremely troubled about the rapid increase of youth using these products and has repeatedly called upon the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase their oversight and scrutiny of these products to protect kids. This is Quitting is a free and anonymous text messaging program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind quit program has helped over 700,000 youth and young adults quit vaping by incorporating messages from other young people like them who have attempted to, or successfully quit, e-cigarettes. Truth Initiative is America's largest nonprofit public health organization committed to preventing youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empowering quitting for all.
We also left out propylene glycol, a petroleum byproduct often used as a flavor enhancer. This stuff isn't considered toxic, but it adds a harsh edge to your inhale, and we wanted to stick to strictly plant-based components. I understand that for a few moments during your meal you may have a sniff of my vape that you don’t care for, but I’m sure that it isn’t as horrible as you make it sound in your rant. Vaping is the term often used to describe the act of using an electronic cigarette. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid solution — usually, but not always, containing nicotine — turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. If the base nicotine mixture is not palatable, many flavors, such as mint, apple and others, can make vaping attractive, especially to adolescents. "We also did not see evidence that teens who quit vaping transitioned to smoking," added Graham. The text message intervention tested in this study is called This is Quitting, now part of the EX Program from Truth Initiative.
These findings can reflect general openness to nicotine use, indicated by a previous study showing considerable overlap between susceptibility types [24]. Several school-level factors have a role in both youth tobacco use and educational pathways. These include school rules and policies, physical environment, curriculum, discipline, school health services, school social and learning environment, student commitment to learning and school community as well as parents and the broader community [26]. Further, school influence partly occurs through the perceptions of smoking behaviour in the social network (descriptive norms) and perceptions of social network beliefs (injunctive norms), which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].
FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. Get more information on small cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and the diagnosis of lung cancer stages. Also, "it is clear from the scientific literature that a variety of toxic compounds besides nicotine are present in aerosolized e-liquid," the researchers added. These chemicals have been linked to lung inflammation, chronic coughs, shortness of breath and lung disease.
To truly help tobacco users quit and to strengthen global tobacco control, governments need to scale up policies and interventions that we know work. Tried and tested interventions, such as brief advice from health professionals, national toll-free quit lines and mobile and digital cessation services are recommended. Where economically feasible, governments should also consider promoting nicotine replacement therapies and non-nicotine pharmacotherapies for cessation. E-cigarette emissions typically contain nicotine and other toxic substances that are harmful to both users and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand.
The agency says companies were blocked because they couldn’t show the possible benefits for adult smokers outweighed the risk of underage use. The companies say they had prepared detailed plans to avoid appealing to young people. Levels of naphthalene were slightly higher than those of pyrene in e-cigarette emissions, while the respective air blank was lower. Nevertheless, it seems likely that these compounds were detected in e-cigarette emissions due to their presence as low-level contaminants in the background air, rather than originating from the vaping product. E-cigarettes are devices that use an electric battery to heat up a liquid (commonly called an "e-liquid") into an aerosol, which the user inhales. Vitamin E acetate, diacetyl, formaldehyde, and acrolein are just a few among hundreds of potentially hazardous substances commonly found in e-liquids and their aerosols.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking. Some people believe e-cigarettes may help lower nicotine cravings in those who are trying to quit smoking. However, e-cigarettes are not an FDA-approved quit aid, and there is no conclusive scientific evidence on the effectiveness of vaping for long-term smoking cessation. It should be noted that there are seven FDA-approved quit aids that are proven safe and can be effective when used as directed.

Although stopping smoking can cause short-term side effects such as reversible weight gain, smoking cessation services and activities are cost-effective because of the positive health benefits. Further, educational aspirations and school engagement are tied to student composition and school-based networks and norms, which have had different associations with smoking between schools [28].
Do we really know the composition of the inhaled vapour during the heating process and its impact on health? In the present review, we have attempted to clarify these questions based on the existing scientific literature, and we have compiled new insights related with the toxicity derived from the use of these devices. E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. The liquid in e-cigarettes is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid.
However, many young users report they began using e-cigarettes because of the flavors and, according to CDC, do not realize they are inhaling nicotine. E-cigarettes are relatively new, and their long-term effects are not yet known. Although they may potentially be less harmful substitutes for traditional cigarettes, risks of addiction, injury, and death from e-cigarettes are becoming more apparent. Wehrli noted that they observed these striking changes after the participants (all of whom never smoked previously) used an e-cigarette a single time.
The FDA has the legal authority to regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source, including synthetic nicotine. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.
With millions of teens and young adults using e-cigarettes, a new generation could become addicted to nicotine and face other health risks. For some adult smokers, e-cigarettes may offer a less harmful substitute for traditional cigarettes. However, long-term effects on users, second-hand exposure, and environmental effects are not yet fully known. The e-liquid typically contains humectants and flavourings, with or without nicotine; once vapourised by the atomiser, the aerosol (vapour) provides a sensation similar to tobacco smoking, but purportedly without harmful effects [3].

Juul’s C.E.O., Kevin Burns, who is fifty-four, has a friendly dad-who-loves-his-vacation-house demeanor. Burns described Juul to me as a "cigarette-killing company." Before he accepted the job, he said, he convened an informal focus group in his kitchen with his son, who’s in high school, and a few of his son’s friends. He asked them why they had these things, when they got them, how prevalent they were. "We have frustrations about how the product is glorified on social media," he told me. I admitted to Winickoff that I was probably endangering my lungs as a weed smoker. He gamely pointed out that I could look into ingested forms of marijuana, and noted that my brain was in a much more stable place than it had been when I was twenty-one.

Indeed, one of the limitations of the study was that human cells are not exposed to e-liquids per se, but rather to the aerosols where the concentrations are lower [86]. In this line, the maximum concentration tested (1000 µM) would correspond to approximately 80 to 150 ppm, which is far higher than the levels found in aerosols of some of these compounds [84]. Moreover, on a day-to-day basis, lungs of e-cigarette users are not constantly exposed to these chemicals for 24 h at these concentrations. Similar limitations were found when five of seven flavourings were found to cause cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cells [87]. It is well known that nicotine is extremely addictive and has a multitude of harmful effects. Nicotine has significant biologic activity and adversely affects several physiological systems including the cardiovascular, respiratory, immunological and reproductive systems, and can also compromise lung and kidney function [41].
Screen all patients, encourage them to quit, and refer patients to evidence-based services for help quitting. However, nicotine used in vaping liquids is often sourced and extracted from tobacco plants. More recently, products containing synthetic nicotine, which is created through chemical processes, have been made available in Canada.
Several states have imposed restrictions on the sale of e-cigarettes. There are also restrictions on liquids with flavors that may be more attractive to younger people. The researchers also noted a lack of evidence that vaping is an effective means of quitting smoking. The marketing of e-cigarettes and their range of flavors can give the impression that vaping is not harmful.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved any e-cigarette products as a medicine to help people quit smoking. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, include e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookah, and e-cigars are known collectively as ENDS— electronic nicotine delivery systems. According to the FDA, e-cigarettes are devices that allow users to inhale an aerosol containing nicotine or other substances. Other studies show that newer e-cigarettes deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could be a reason why these findings were observed. The authors acknowledge that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes and that their study did not evaluate risks of youth e-cigarette use. Over the next few years, the optimism over e-cigarettes waned as their popularity skyrocketed. Juul’s sales increased over 600 percent each year to become the best selling device on the market while I inhaled an atmosphere’s worth of vanilla vapor into my lungs.
As vaping is still relatively new, we can’t be sure there aren’t any long-term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour. E-cigarettes should only be used to help you stop smoking, or to stop you going back to tobacco. After using my vape (e-cigarette) for over a year now, my body feels so much better than when I was smoking cigarettes.
The review authors conclude that further research could help untangle how vapers’ bodies develop disease. These types of studies, they say, promise to identify early indicators of—and ultimately treatments for—vaping-related disease. While some tout e-cigarettes as a solution to quitting conventional smoking, the truth about relative risks is complicated, says Crotty Alexander, who is a researcher in addition to providing patient care and teaching.
Set firm expectations that they do not use any type of commercial tobacco product, including e-cigarettes and vapes. For more guidance, here's a tip sheet for talking to your children about e-cigarettes. Electronic smoking devices (ESDs) do not just emit "harmless water vapor." Secondhand aerosol (incorrectly called vapor by the industry) from ESDs contains nicotine, ultrafine particles and low levels of toxins that are known to cause cancer.
E-cigarettes can help people stop smoking and are an effective stop smoking tool. There’s no safe level of smoking, so it is important to stop tobacco-use completely. You may have heard different things in the media about the side effects of vaping. This page gives an overview of what we know so far about how vaping can affect your health. Our information relates to legal e-cigarettes – ones that are registered with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA).
In 2022–2023, 2.3% of people in Australia both smoked regular cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes, an increase from 0.7% in 2016. In the second study, researchers analyzed heart blood flow, a measure of coronary vascular function, of 19 young adult smokers immediately before and after smoking either e-cigarettes or tobacco cigarettes. They examined coronary vascular function by a myocardial contrast echocardiography while participants were at rest and after performing a handgrip exercise to simulate physiologic stress. In the first study, researchers looked at the impact of e-cigarettes on lipids and glucose in the blood. They recruited 476 healthy human participants without cardiovascular disease who were either nonsmokers, e-cigarette-only smokers, smokers of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and those who smoked tobacco cigarettes only.
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting. Local stop smoking services should look to support e-cigarette users in their journey to quitting completely.
During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. During the second half of the 20th century, the adverse health effects of tobacco smoking started to become widely known and printed health warnings became common on cigarette packets. This health advisory is being issued by the State Health Officer to inform the public about the alarming statistics on current e-cigarette use among youth in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, current e-cigarette use among Wisconsin high school students increased 154% between 2014 and 2018.
According to the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million teens reported vaping nicotine, and there was an increase in current overall tobacco product use among middle school students (4.5% to 6.6%) and multiple tobacco product use (1.5% to 2.5%). They are not technically categorized as smokeless tobacco, so the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate them as strictly as smoked tobacco products or combustible tobacco. Without long-term data, we cannot be certain if or how reduced exposure will prevent harm to one’s health. In Canada, most of the provinces require smokers to be 19 years of age to purchase cigarettes (except for Quebec and the prairie provinces, where the age is 18). However, the minimum age only concerns the purchase of tobacco, not use. Alberta, however, does have a law which prohibits the possession or use of tobacco products by all persons under 18, punishable by a $100 fine.
According to Blaha, there are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. State and local authorities can restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.
Studies have found that nearly two-thirds of adult e-cigarette users plan to quit, and almost a quarter of adolescents want to quit and have made a quit attempt. We hope this article helps you feel a little more secure about your choice of vaping products. Remember that the safest way to use any vape is in moderation, so try not to overdo it, no matter which one you choose. Flavored vapes without nicotine (and other types of vapes) come in hundreds of different sizes and styles, and some are less risky than others. How can you decide which ones are safest and what's considered a healthy vape brand. Our only gripe with CAPNOS is that they're a little vague about where exactly their flavors come from.
Some people believe that e-cigarettes can help them quit smoking tobacco. However, nicotine patches and many other FDA-approved quit aids are available now to help people quit smoking. E-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA as aids to help stop smoking.
Some of the research for Tobacco Tactics was funded by Cancer Research UK Limited and Bloomberg Philanthropies. This work has previously received funding from The New Venture Fund, Smokefree South West, and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Knowledge Exchange Opportunities scheme. These funders have had no input into the research reported on this website or its conclusions. They are not responsible for its content or publication, nor do they necessarily endorse it.
When studying tobacco cigarettes, researchers rely on smoking machines that simulate how frequently a typical smoker takes a puff and how much smoke is inhaled with each breath. No one has yet determined how much e-cig vapor the typical user breathes in, so different studies assume different amounts of vapor as their standard, making it difficult to compare their results. Tracing what happens to that vapor once it is inhaled is equally problematic.
Restrictions on importation, packaging and flavourings will come into effect in early 2024 (TGA 2023). Between 2012 and 2022, most Australian jurisdictions have amended their laws to further restrict the advertising and sale of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b). Recent reports have linked serious lung injury – and even deaths – to vaping. According to the CDC, cigarette smoking causes nearly 1 out of every five deaths in the United States. It’s possible that we don’t yet know all the physical effects of vaping. Numerous studies have been performed to evaluate the safety/toxicity of e-cigarette use both in vivo and in in vitro cell culture.
In smoking and school disengagement (e.g. truancy), students often choose to affiliate with similar peers [28, 29]. Smoking prevalence has been lower in schools where educational attainment and attendance are better than predicted based on student socio-demographic factors, indicating the importance of positive school ethos [30]. Yet, other school-level factors than school connectedness [22] have rarely been studied in connection with susceptibility. Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. Approximately 38 percent of Delaware high school students reported ever trying an electronic vapor product. Finally, the researchers compared the levels of nicotine in the blood serum of people after they had vaped e-cigarettes with the levels in people who smoked traditional cigarettes.
Starting to use e-cigarettes or switching from tobacco products to e-cigarettes increases your risk of adverse health effects. Interestingly, there is a strong difference of opinion on e-cigarettes between countries. Whereas countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and India have banned the sale of e-cigarettes, others such as the United Kingdom support this device to quit smoking.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
Other important components in the aerosols include silicate particles from the fiberglass wicks or silicone [89,90,91]. Many of these products are known to cause abnormalities in respiratory function and respiratory diseases [89,90,91], but more in-depth studies are required. Interestingly, the battery output voltage also seems to have an impact on the cytotoxicity of the aerosol vapours, with e-liquids from a higher battery output voltage showing more toxicity to A549 cells [30]. The lethal dose of nicotine for an adult is estimated at 30–60 mg [52].
Steer clear of unregulated mods unless you have lots of experience vaping and a decent knowledge of electronics. Like disposable vapes, these devices don't allow modification to the battery and heating element. The difference is that they're rechargeable and refillable, letting you swap in a fresh pod or cartridge of vape juice when the old one runs out.
The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing. With a 399.73% increase in retail e-cigarette sales (excluding internet sales and tobacco-specialty stores) from 2015 through 2020, the environmental consequences of e-cigarette waste are enormous. The fourth-generation vaporizers can also be customized and come with different types of heating coils — some intended for vaporizing solids, not liquids. In general, people using e‑cigarettes did not report doing so in order to quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. In 2022–2023, only 1 in 5 (21%) people who had ever used e‑cigarettes reported that they first used e‑cigarettes to help them quit smoking (Figure 5). The most common reason people gave for using e‑cigarettes was out of curiosity (58%).
To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.
The survey also found that Minnesota youth are ill-informed about the health risks of e-cigarettes with 76.1% of 11th graders saying there is either no, slight, or a moderate risk to using e-cigarettes. 11th grade students responding to the student survey said that the top ways they got e-cigarettes included getting products from friends (72.3%), getting products at a vape shop (14.0%), and on the Internet (9.6%). Among 8th grade students, e-cigarette use nearly doubled from 2016 to 2019, and one in four 11th graders now use e-cigarettes. Students in all grades surveyed now use e-cigarettes and vapes at five times the rate of conventional cigarettes. In Australia, during the survey period, it was not legal to obtain e‑cigarettes containing nicotine without a prescription (TGA 2020).
In December 2019, Congress raised the minimum age to buy tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21. Because of the popularity of certain flavored e-cigarette products among children, FDA stated in January 2020 that it would prioritize enforcement actions against the manufacture and sale of most flavors in cartridge-based e-cigarettes. In April 2020, FDA extended from May to September 2020 the deadline for manufacturers to apply for premarket authorization, a process that includes the scientific evaluation of risks and benefits of e-cigarettes for the U.S. population. NCI supports research to understand the potential impact of ENDS use on both individual and population health, as it relates to cancer control and prevention.
E-cigarettes have become the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. and Iowa youth, and their popularity has risen dramatically over the past several years. According to the Iowa Youth Survey (IYS), Iowa 11th-graders were far more likely to use e-cigarettes compared to traditional cigarettes. They also reported increased likelihood in trying e-cigarettes and decreased quit success when compared to cigarettes.
In addition to these laws, e-cigarettes are prohibited from being used in child care facilities, and people purchasing tobacco products have to pay a 15 percent tax. While not all the effects of smoking are immediate, the complications and damage can last for years. The good news is that quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases below. For a long time, e-cigarettes and other electronic aerosolizers weren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They only came under the purview of the FDA in 2016, after they had been on the market for nearly a decade.
